Emelia S. Chargualaf was a superdelegate to the 2016 Democratic National Convention from the Northern Mariana Islands.[1] Chargualaf was one of five superdelegates from the Northern Mariana Islands. Superdelegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention were not bound by the results of their territory’s primary or caucus results to support a specific presidential candidate. Chargualaf supported Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.[2] Clinton formally won the Democratic nomination for president on July 26, 2016.[3]
What is a superdelegate?
Superdelegates in 2016 were automatic delegates to the Democratic National Convention, meaning that, unlike regular delegates, they were not elected to this position. Also unlike regular delegates, they were not required to pledge their support to any presidential candidate, and they were not bound by the results of their state's presidential primary election or caucus. In 2016, superdelegates included members of the Democratic National Committee, Democratic members of Congress, Democratic governors, and distinguished party leaders, including former presidents and vice presidents. All superdelegates were free to support any presidential candidate of their choosing at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.[4]
Northern Mariana Islands primary results
Hillary Clinton won the Northern Mariana Islands' first-ever Democratic caucuses. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton received 102 votes and Bernie Sanders received 65 votes.[5] Clinton entered the caucuses with the support of one unpledged superdelegate and won four additional delegates; Sanders won two delegates. The caucuses took place on the islands of Tinian, Saipan and Rota.[6]
