Campaign themes
2016
Cancel's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
| “ |
Affordable Housing I will continue to fight for additional State funding for NYCHA. I will fight for affordable housing for our senior citizens, and I will fight for permanent affordable housing for people who are low income to middle class. Tenants' Rights Rents keep going up faster than salaries, and people have to spend more of their hard earned income just to keep a roof over their heads. Tenants who live in rent controlled and stabilized apartments need more protection from unfair and illegal evictions, that allow landlords to raise the rent to market rates. I believe that rent laws need to be strengthened to better support all tenants. I believe all tenants should have access to affordable legal advice when they go before a judge in housing court. I will fight to strengthen laws which protect tenants, and I will fight to expand funding for legal representation for tenants in housing court. A Living Minimum Wage I will support the living wage of $15.00 per hour. Taxpayers end up subsidizing those businesses that do not pay a living wage, through public assistance programs. People who work full time should not have to rely on food stamps and other types of public assistance just to get by. Full time workers should be able to support themselves and their families with the wages they have earned. Quality Education for All Students I will fight for tuition free community college, and will fight to fund more extensive state grants to students in need. Senior Citizens I will continue to fight to preserve and build affordable senior housing. I will fight for programs such as SCRIE which allow seniors to remain in their apartments despite rent increases. I will fight for accessible quality health care for seniors, and state insurance programs that will fully cover low income senior health care needs and medications.[2] |

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
