Campaign themes

2016

Kossow's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Transparency of Government

  • Our Government is our leader, and our enforcer of the law. It is the right of government to provide safety and security to our communities. However, government at times can be disloyal, therefore, it is the right of the people to access information regarding the government's doings.

Agriculture

  • You may have heard from others that agriculture is an important component in our community. They are right when someone says that, in fact I would further it and say that it is our vein to the heart of Kona. Over the last several years the agriculture sector has diminished. Some say that more than 80% of our food is imported to the islands. We need to expand our agricultural industry, not by scaring the average farmer or gardener, but by encouraging and motivating them, and by allowing schools to build efficient ways to cultivate the ‘āina. Let us give the dignity of farming back to Kona.

Education

  • We need more support in our schools. We need to expand funding for our teachers so that they can unlock students' fullest potentials. I believe that every individual has a right to an education - to read, to write, to be liberated, to think critically, and to think for yourself. Education doesn’t just halt in our preschools, elementary, intermediate, and high schools. It also correlates into our higher education, the expansion of knowledge and the preparation from preschools to higher education. Education is an important investment, moving forward, for everyone.

Energy

  • Moving forward into the 21st Century, we need to expand our clean and renewable energy. For us in Kona, we feel the presence of the sun and we must realize we are able to harness this energy. All homes and structures has a green pathway, by using clean energy and taking part to clean the world.

Homelessness

  • Lately, here in Kona the homeless issue has grown significantly. My immediate view is to build shelters and allow those suffering from homelessness to have a roof over their heads. Then we could discuss how to allow our fellow brothers and sisters to transition into the workforce.[1]
