In Michigan, there is one primary agency involved in statewide campaign finance regulation: the Michigan Secretary of State.
Authority
As the state's chief elections official, the secretary of state oversees the campaign finance reporting process for candidates and political committees. In addition, the secretary of state is authorized to investigate alleged civil violations of Michigan's campaign finance laws. The secretary of state may levy a civil fine "not more than triple the amount of the improper contribution or expenditure plus not more than $1,000.00 for each violation."[1] Alleged criminal violations of the law are prosecuted by the attorney general.[1]
Electronic reporting system
Michigan hosts an online campaign finance records system. The system can be accessed here. The public may view disclosure reports here.
