Three of the nine seats on the Edison Township Public Schools school board were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. Theresa Ward was the sole incumbent to run for re-election. Ward, Richard Brescher, and Xiaohan Peng defeated William Araujo for the three seats up for election. Nilesh Dasondi originally filed to run but withdrew from the race before the election.[1]

The Edison Township school board consists of nine members elected at large to three-year terms by the district as a whole. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Candidates for the school board must be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. They must have resided within the district for at least one year prior to election or appointment. Candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of Edison. Board members cannot have been convicted of a felony. There are no term limits.[2]

Edison Township Public Schools is located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The county seat is New Brunswick. Middlesex County was home to 840,900 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the sixth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 14,521 students.[8]

Demographics

Middlesex County outperformed New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 40.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income in Middlesex County was $80,118, compared to $72,062 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 8.3 percent, compared to 10.8 percent statewide.[7]
