Candidate Connection

Ginger Garner participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 7, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Ginger Garner's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Healthcare - Without our health, we have nothing. Too many North Carolinians struggle with access to care. We have a moral obligation to remedy this problem.

2) Stewardship of our environment - The food we eat, clean air we breathe, and water we drink is endangered if we do not caretake these finite resources.
3) Education and Jobs - We cannot attract and retain the best and brightest teachers nor produce the best and brightest students if we do not invest in public education and sustainable job creation.[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am a mother of three, and I see NC, and America as a whole, failing its families. We need to invest in families and help them thrive. The shameful lack of policy to support the family is more than apparent when you look at the statistics that put our maternal and infant mortality rate, our postpartum depression rates, our childhood poverty rate, and our family leave and early childhood education status below that of even some developing countries. The prosperity of a nation depends on the well-being of its citizens – and right now we are doing a terrible job in supporting the American family. I am also a doctor of physical therapy and educator with 20 years of experience helping people in chronic and persistent pain. I have seen firsthand what healthcare is doing and where it is failing. I’ve spent my career forging new ways to address pain in patient care. We must address the opioid epidemic with healthcare reform that includes access to preventive and conservative care. This also includes working to provide dignified healthcare for all citizens.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Ginger Garner answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

The ability to forge civil discourse across party lines to find common ground for the common good.[4]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a mother of three, a mother to a child with special needs, a successful small business owner, a doctor of physical therapy and clinician treating people in pain, a researcher, a published author in 4 languages, a community volunteer, a Methodist, and a daughter who has overcome poverty with a background that respects both Republican and Democratic ideals. I grew up in a conservative Christian household and spent time as a Republican and Independent before becoming a Democrat. I will use that moderate background and experience to hold office with empathy, compassion, partnership-based relationship, and steadfast determination to overcome great odds and serve the people. As a proven leader in my career field and as someone who understands poverty, pain, and being the underdog, I will lead and serve by example with an open door policy as Senator.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To be the voice of the people, not special interests. To be a leader, not a lobbyist. To be a steady, even-tempered, decisive servant of the people. To know when to speak and when to listen.[4]
