Only two contested races occurred in Idaho during the general election, as most had already been decided in the primary election on May 20, 2014. In the primary, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff in the November election.

A total of 92 judicial candidates competed in the 2014 election, including 79 incumbents seeking re-election. In Idaho, only magistrates participate in retention elections. In 2014, 38 magistrate court judges were retained with an average retention rate of 83.0%. This was the third highest average of the states that had retention elections in 2014, after Montana and Maryland.
