James Newland was a candidate for District 8 of the Laredo City Council in Texas. Newland was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016.[1]

Newland ran for mayor of Laredo in 2010 and 2014. He won 2 percent of the vote in the 2010 mayoral race, placing fifth of five candidates competing for the seat. In 2014, he won 1 percent of the vote, coming in fifth out of seven candidates.[2][3]

As of his run for city council in 2016, Newland worked for Laredo's public transportation system, El Metro Transit.[4][5]

At a 2014 mayoral candidate forum, Newland said, "if I am elected, my main priority would be public safety."[6]

2010

During his 2010 mayoral campaign, Newland told the Laredo Morning Times that his top three priorities were:

One: Motivate all persons to conduct ourselves with rectitude and regard each other as brothers. Two: Find ways for the city to beautify, improve, repair, keep, and maintain public places and buildings, as well as helping private homes and businesses do the same. Three: Invite businessmen to invest and tourists to visit. Specifically, among other creative ideas, conducting a regularly-televised 'Mayor's City Address.'[7][8]

The city of Laredo, Texas, held elections for city council on November 8, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was August 22, 2016. Four of the seven city council seats were up for election. The District 4 race advanced to a runoff election on December 17, 2016. Incumbent Roberto Balli defeated James Newland in the Laredo City Council District 8 general election.[9]

The city of Laredo, Texas held elections for mayor on November 4, 2014. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was August 18, 2014.[10] Candidates included Guadalupe Botello, Rolando S. Herrera, Jose S. Dorantes Jr., Pete Saenz, James Joel Newland, Cindy Liendo and Jerry Garza. Pete Saenz was the winner. Incumbent Raul G. Salinas was ineligible to run for re-election due to term limits.[11][12]
