John Cosgrove (Republican Party) was a member of the Virginia State Senate, representing District 14. He assumed office in 2013. He left office on September 22, 2023.

Cosgrove (Republican Party) ran for re-election to the Virginia State Senate to represent District 14. He won in the general election on November 5, 2019.

Cosgrove was first elected to the state Senate in a special election on August 6, 2013. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 78 from 2002 to 2013.

Cosgrove resigned from the state Senate on September 22, 2023, after he was appointed deputy commissioner of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.[1]

Biography

Since 1987 Cosgrove has worked as an Aerospace Engineering Officer with United States Navy Reserves. He served on the Chesapeake City Council from 1998 to 2000, and as Vice-Mayor from 2000 to 2001.[2]

Elections for the Virginia State Senate took place in 2015. A primary election was held on June 9, 2015. The general election took place on November 3, 2015. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 26, 2015.[3] No Democratic candidates filed for election. Incumbent John Cosgrove, Jr. defeated Bill Haley in the Republican primary and was unchallenged in the general election.[4]

Cosgrove won election in the special election for Virginia State Senate District 14. The seat was vacant following Harry Blevins's (R) retirement on August 5. Cosgrove ran upposed after his opponent, Kerry B. Holmes (D), withdrew prior to the special election, which took place on August 6.[5][6][7]

Cosgrove ran for re-election in the 2013 election for Virginia House of Delegates District 78. Cosgrove ran unopposed in the June 11 Republican primary. As he won a special election on August 6 for the Senate seat of Harry Blevins (R), his house seat will be filled in the general election that took place on November 5, 2013.

On November 8, 2011, Cosgrove won re-election to District 78 of the Virginia House of Delegates. He was uncontested in the August 23 primary and ran unopposed in the November 8 general election.[8]
