Campaign themes

2014

Smith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Lower Taxes for the Middle Class and Small Businesses

  • Excerpt: "Oregon's tax system needs dramatic reform. The poor and middle class pay way too much in taxes. The Oregon tax bracket should be restructured so that Corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share and the middle class and small businesses pay less."

Oregon Health Plan for All

  • Excerpt: "I propose high quality universal healthcare for all Oregonians with everybody in and nobody out. Everyone should have their choice of doctor and be able to keep their doctor. Universal health care will relieve the burden on small businesses of finding affordable health insurance for their employees while providing health care to all Oregonians."

Legalization of Industrial Hemp and Marijuana

  • Excerpt: "Hemp is the strongest fiber in the world. It is a renewable resource that can be used to make biodegradable plastics, soaps, paper, etc...The legalization of hemp and marijuana would create high paying manufacturing jobs for Oregonians in numerous industries and give farmers a high paying crop."

Public Bank for Oregon

  • Excerpt: "If elected, I will propose the creation of a state-owned bank in Oregon, modeled after the highly successful Bank of North Dakota, that would lend to farmers, small businesses, students, and homebuyers, in order to strengthen Oregon’s economy."

A Living Wage for Oregon

  • Excerpt: "I propose a minimum wage of $15/hr to help raise workers out of poverty."
