In information submitted to Ballotpedia, Lowery outlined her political philosophy and why she is running:[1]
"Most of my life, I was not interested in politics. When I did become interested, I was disgusted by it. I could not understand why anyone would want to be involved in such a dirty, dishonest business. I made a conscious choice not to even belong to a political party, so I was free to vote for the person who seemed to have the most integrity and values that aligned with my own.
So why am I now running for the Senate? Because I realized that if everyone with integrity and strong ethics felt as I did, there would never be people in government who were worth voting for. I made a choice to put my hat in the ring, knowing that I will potentially be abused by the media, those who run against me, and those who don't like me for their own personal reasons.
I am running because I love my country and I don't like the direction it is taking. I want to do what I can to put it right. I love the people in my community, and I want to stand up for their rights. I am willing to be hated and gossiped about, in order to help those that I am able to help. I want to represent the ""under-represented"" population in the state of Washington."

Lowery ran in the 2012 election for Washington State Senate, District 20. Lowery was defeated by Dan Swecker and John E. Braun in the August 7 blanket primary election. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
Going into the election Lowery stated, "This is the first political office I have sought. I have never held a political party office before, and other than attending city council meetings, voting in every election in my district, and staying current on politics, I have tried to avoid politics up until this point."[1]
