I grew up on a small farm east of Roseburg. My father taught me the valuable lesson of hard work and the importance of completing a job. Since those early years, I served six years in the Oregon National Guard, I worked as a driver and then as Eugene Center Manager for UPS, and for the last 35 years, I have been a small business owner. Our current business, De Casa Fine Foods, is located in west Eugene. Eugene has been my home for 40 years. My wife and I have been married for 47 years, and we have two daughters. It has been a blessing and privilege to live in Oregon and to enjoy all our state has to offer.
  • Strong supporter of businesses. Small businesses are the foundation of our economy. During the pandemic, our Governor declared some small businesses non-essential and was forced to close their doors. Some were not able to recover from forced closure and are now out of business. These businesses hired locally, and their money stayed in the community. The owners were our neighbors, and their children played with our children. ALL businesses are essential. I know business and will be a strong advocate for small business owners.
  • Community safety. We must make further investments to keep our communities safe. Our police not only need adequate funding but deserve our respect. We need quick response when we are facing a crisis. In 1980 we had approximately 2.5 million people in Oregon and had an Oregon State Trooper force of 547. Today we have approximately 4.3 million people with a force of only 458. Our police are protecting more citizens with fewer officers. This leaves much of rural Oregon with no police officers for hours each day. To have safe communities in all of Oregon, we need to increase funding and the number of officers. Our law enforcement is also required for traffic safety. Western Eugene and the Fern Ridge area are experiencing high traffic fatalities
  • Parental Involvement in Their Children's Education I will work to make it mandatory that all curriculums be posted on the school district's website for parents to see what is being taught to their children. We must reinstate graduation standards so students have to show proficiency in Essential Learning Skills. Skills in math, reading, and writing are essential to compete for employment. Let's get back to teaching the basics.
Education Policy- Many parents have chosen not to send their children to public schools. We do not have a one size fits all education system. They're great alternatives to public schools such as charter, magnet, and private schools. Parents who choose an alternative to public school should receive financial assistance with school vouchers.

Budget Policy- We must have a transparent budget process and expose and stop wasteful spending. All excess revenue beyond funding the biennium budget is to be returned to taxpayers.
Like most people starting out in life, I worked in service industries such as pumping gas and other short term jobs where I was acquiring job skills and learning responsibilities. By the age of 22, I was hired by UPS as a driver. It was a great job and I had an excellent supervisor. He was fair and trusted his drivers. I observed how he handled situations and knew I wanted to become a supervisor. Since I like challenges I asked for extra assignments, such as covering vacation routes. After driving less than two years I was promoted to supervisor. My first supervisory assignment was to work with front line operation supervisors in southern Oregon to improve and streamline their operation. I moved up in the company, holding other supervisory positions until I was assigned manager of the Eugene center. After nearly 11 years at UPS I made the decision to resign and become a small business owner.

As I stated my first jobs were in the service industry. It was in those early jobs I learned how to work with others, how important it is to follow company policies, and if I was going to succeed in life it was up to me to show initiative. These skills have served me well in every position I have held. I feel it is important for young people to learn these skills early.
