Candidate Connection

Tim Guiles completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Guiles' responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Universal healthcare $15 minimum wage Shifting education funding away from property tax and towards income tax

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Social and environmental justice

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Bernie Sanders

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Viking economics

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Truthfulness. And the ability to understand nuance.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I listen well. And I'm willing to take unpopular positions that I think are important.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

An elected official is responsible to listen and understand the views of his/her constituents. And, to become deeply informed about issues (which his/her constituents do NOT have time for). Then the elected official must use his/her best judgement to choose a path forward.

What legacy would you like to leave?

Vermont will be a more just and peaceful place.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

Both the assassination of Martin Luther King - - - and the Vietnam war - - - we're powerful historical events that shaped my world view. I was born in 1959 - - - I was 8 when king was assasinated. Many of my friends had older siblings in the Vietnam war.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

No

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Healthcare and the minimum wage (so that everybody benefits from a growing economy)

What process do you favor for redistricting?

There is a growing science that can measure the degree of gerrymandering. Much like the way our school districts can measure when homes need to be reassessed for fair taxation. We should use science to assure that the districts are minimally gerrymandered.
