In 2009, there were three races for three state supreme courts, in Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Louisiana

A vacancy on the Louisiana Supreme Court was created with the 2009 retirement of Justice Chet Traylor. 4th District Judge Marcus Clark defeated former executive counsel to Governor Bobby Jindal, Jimmy Faircloth on October 17, 2009. [1][2]

Pennsylvania

An election was held in November 2009 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Justice Ralph Cappy. Joan Orie Melvin was elected to the court.[3]

In April 2009, incumbent justice Shirley Abrahamson defended her seat on the court against challenger, Jefferson County judge Randy Koschnick.[4]
