Metropolitan School District of Pike Township is a school district in Indiana. The district was the 18th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 11,069 students.[1]

Demographics

Marion County outperformed Indiana as a whole in terms of higher education attainment between 2010 and 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 27.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 23.6 percent of state residents. The median household income for the county was $42,378, compared to $48,737 for the state. County residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 21.3 percent, while that rate was 14.5 percent for state residents.[2]

Flora Reichanadter is the superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township. Reichanadter was appointed superintendent in January 2017. Reichanadter's previous career experience includes working as a teacher, the superintendent of the Franklin Township Community School Corporation, and the director of elementary curriculum of Hamilton Southeastern Schools.[4][5]

Past superintendents

  • Nathaniel Jones was the superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township from 2003 to 2016. Jones's previous career experience included working as a teacher.[6]

School board elections

Metropolitan School District of Pike Township schools are overseen by a seven-member board elected at-large to four-year terms. School board members are paid $2,000 annually for their services. In addition to this amount, members are given the choice to either elect insurance or opt out of the coverage and receive $112 per meeting instead.[7]

Public participation in board meetings

The Metropolitan School District of Pike Township Board of Education maintains the following policy on public testimony during board meetings:

The School Board recognizes the value of public comment on educational issues and the importance of allowing members of the public to express themselves on Corporation matters. Any person or group wishing to place an item on the agenda shall register their intent with the Superintendent no later than seven (7) calendar days prior to the meeting and include:

A. name and address of the participant;

B. group affiliation, if and when appropriate;

C. topic to be addressed.

Such requests shall be approved by the Superintendent and the Board President. [8]

Teacher salaries

The base salary range for teachers in the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township for the 2015 – 2016 school year is from $40,921 to $80,749. According to the district, "All teachers receiving an 'effective' or 'highly effective' rating for the 2014 -2015 school year from the corporation shall receive an additional $1,400 added to their base salary beginning with the 2015 – 2016 school year. If this additional base salary increase is less than a 2% increase from the 2014 – 2015 school year, a stipend will be paid on December 11, 2015 in the amount necessary to bring the total to 2% of the teacher’s 2014-2015 base salary."[11]
