Candidate Connection

Michael McFarland participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on March 29, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Michael McFarland's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Putting an end to civil asset forfeiture.

2) Lifting economic restrictions such as occupational licensing.
3) Ending the failed drug war that has made our streets and our border more dangerous.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Government spending, criminal justice reform, and economic policy. These three areas have a direct impact on the community, and are important battle grounds between authoritarianism and libertarianism.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Michael McFarland answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, integrity, empathy, and moral courage.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To safeguard the liberties of the people, and to be a responsible steward of the resources that belong to the public.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, happened when I was 12 years old, and I will never forget that day.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I mowed lawns for two or three years as young boy. Something that is illegal in some states and cities without the proper government blessings.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Independence Day, because it combines some of my favorite things. History, the celebration of liberty, food, music, family, and fireworks.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
I Need a Dollar by Aloe Blacc[3]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Water[3]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. To defeat or pass legislation takes votes, and a one person show just won't cut it.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Federalism, Property Rights, and Public Policy Committee, Commerce Committee, and the Appropriations Committee.[3]
