Sweeney filed to run for auditor general of Pennsylvania as a Green Party candidate in 2016. He competed in the November 8 general election with incumbent Eugene DePasquale (D), John A. Brown (R), and Roy Minet (Lib.).

Incumbent Eugene DePasquale defeated John A. Brown, John Sweeney, and Roy Minet in the Pennsylvania auditor election.

Elections for the Pennsylvania State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on May 20, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in that election was March 11, 2014. Incumbent Lisa Baker was unopposed in the Republican primary. Green Party candidate John J. Sweeney was removed from the ballot before the general election after Baker's campaign challenged his petition signatures and a judge ruled in favor of the challenge. Baker was unchallenged in the general election.[1][2][3]
