Johnson on agriculture and food policy
- In July 2012, Johnson addressed the issue of products containing GMO ingredients in an email to ProCon.org. He wrote, “While I generally resist the idea of government mandates, public safety is a legitimate government function.” He continued, “For many people, certain food ingredients can do serious harm, and knowing what is in food is absolutely essential. For millions of Americans … knowing what we are eating is not a matter of preference or convenience, (but) rather is an issue of basic safety.”[2]
- In August 2001, while governor of New Mexico, Johnson signed a resolution supporting a national block grant program for agricultural stewardship. Congress approved the program in 2002. It allowed states to receive grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to address environmental threats.[2]
