Campaign themes
2014
Travis' campaign website highlighted the following campaign themes:[2]
- Creating Jobs and Growing the Economy for Everyone
- Excerpt: "Expand the Small Business Job Creation Tax Credit to reward the small business-owners who hire, train, and invest in workers from the neighborhoods hit hardest by unemployment."
- Excerpt: "Tighten the use of TIF funds to support job creation by small local businesses in the neighborhoods hit hardest by blight and unemployment."
- Excerpt: "Raise the minimum wage to put all Illinois workers on a path to prosperity."
- Excerpt: "Fully fund Public Act 1225 (the Community Youth Investment Act) to stimulate the economy, develop a 21st century workforce, and stabilize our communities."
- Excerpt: "Bring greater oversight and capacity-building to government contracting processes, ensuring that public works provide equal opportunity investment to minority-owned businesses, particularly small businesses that generate good jobs in high-unemployment neighborhoods."
- Supporting Excellent Neighborhood Public Schools
- Excerpt: "As state representative, Jay will continue to fight for all children, regardless of race or economic status, to have access to a world-class education in their own neighborhood. Charters and closings do not bring us closer to this goal. Instead, we need sustainable school transformation. First and foremost, Jay will champion a just school funding formula so that all schools can pay for the well-rounded curriculum, experienced teachers, and wraparound supports that our children deserve. Jay is also the only candidate in this race who has consistently championed an elected, representative school board for every district in Illinois. School boards use taxpayer money and they should be held accountable for the policies they set. And lastly, she will be a voice for reason, oversight, and research when it comes to school reform strategies, working proactively to prevent the misappropriation of taxpayer dollars towards unproven, corrupt charter school operators and to instead invest in sustainable school transformation."
- Investing in Safe Streets and Strong Communities
- Excerpt: "Jay is a proponent of comprehensive solutions to the violence that affects our neighborhoods and communities, and she believes in making communities safer and more stable from the ground up."
- Excerpt: "To address the root causes of community violence, Jay will continue to champion funding for youth development and employment, particularly in the summer, when violent crime spikes."
- Excerpt: "Jay will also push for reforms to the criminal justice system to ensure that when ex-offenders return to our communities, they receive job training and support to change their life path."
- Excerpt: "Jay also supports the expansion of Restorative Justice as a strategy to build greater community safety and stability."
- Reforming our Pensions Humanely and Responsibly
- Excerpt: "Jay believes that the pension reform bill that passed this spring broke a promise to elderly retirees and public sector workers. Elderly retirees have earned their retirement security by working hard, paying into the system, setting down roots in our communities, and forgoing Social Security. Stable public sector professions, like teaching and nursing, are a crucial pathway to the middle class for communities across Illinois, and particularly for low-income people of color. She is the only candidate in this race who supports efforts to overturn this flawed pension reform bill, and to replace it with a solution that generates the revenue needed to restore the state’s financial health and provide our seniors with the retirement security that they have worked for all their lives. Jay will support pension reform for the City of Chicago to ensure that the city fully funds its pension obligations."
