Campaign themes
2014
Whiting's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[2]
Transportation
- Excerpt: "We need to plan for, and invest in the future of our State transportation system and infrastructure, now. This could have been done with an increase in motor fuel tax, motor vehicle registration tax increase or motor vehicle sales tax, but the State could have got started by using some of the budget surplus we saw this year."
Education
- Excerpt: "State funding needs to be focused on building students, and not on building buildings and sports complexes. Of even more importance is, the need to support students who, once out of college, over 70% leave college with loans, struggle beneath a mountain of debt and have trouble securing a job within the scope of their chosen field. I support freezing tuition at State funded higher education schools and would support lowering interest rates on student loans."
Aging community
- Excerpt: "The strain on local resources will create a need for additional mechanisms to be created at a State level. Some of these may include better transit options, access to health and care services, protection from identity theft and scamming, better veteran’s services and more advocates to assist aging citizens manage their needs."
Mental Health
- Excerpt: "Improving Minnesota’s mental health system includes; access to needed and necessary treatment, supportive housing options, crisis teams that create early engagement in treatment, transportation alternatives in a psychiatric emergency and support of the Mental Health in Schools Act."
Jobs
- Excerpt: "Efforts need to be continually supported in order to attract good business opportunities to Minnesota. More jobs will equal an increased hiring demand and create better wages which help us keep and attract good employees."
