Candidate Connection

Kent McCumbee completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by McCumbee's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

To abolish WV state income tax on social security when drawing Require STATEWIDE random drug testing for school employees Fix PEIA - The state needs to get out of the insurance business

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Very concerned about the direction of our PUBLIC EMPLOYEES in WV. It use to be said of the PUBLIC EMPLOYEES that they didn't make much but had good benefits. Now that doesn't even ring true with the shape their health insurance is in.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Back in the day we had 2 really good House Of Delegate members. 1 was also a teacher in 11th grade Mr. Allen Goldstrom. The other was Mr. Terry Harden and the thing they both had in common were they cared about PEOPLE. I want to follow in their footsteps.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

No

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Always be truthful to the citizens.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Folks in my district know I keep it real all the time. I focus on issues that the everyday citizen can understand.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

When voting on an issue always think about the folks back home and how it will impact them. To many times folks head to legislature with an agenda that some how is going to help their buddies. That's not the way I roll.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I was an honest member of legislature and tried to do what was right / best for the citizens of WV.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The death of JFK I was about 5 then.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

State of West Virginia / 11 years

What happened on your most awkward date?

Can say I ever had that happen to me.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Halloween & Christmas - because I get to give to others

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Bible / I think that also answers the WHY.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Not sure

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

The picture of my parents. They instilled good values in me and taught me to try and help folks.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Coal Miners Daughter / Loretta Lynn

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Dealing with misinformed people

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

The Republicans are only for the rich and don't understand the struggle of the average person. The Democrat party of today is way out there in leftfield and forgot about their roots of always trying to take care of the little man.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a unicameral state legislature, in your opinion?

I don't think it's a good idea to have everything in 1 "chamber".

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

I would say NO because then you keep the BUDDY BUDDY SYSTEM under control

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Retaining good educators and PUBLIC EMPLOYEES in general.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

In WV right now we have Mr. Justice. He is the perfect fit for all to work with in my opinion. The mans a business man and has been involved in education so I feel he can have a down to earth conversation with the legislature and they also should be able to understand where he is coming from.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Sure long as it doesn't get to the point of the BUDDY SYSTEM to get things done.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

I think is has to be based on population so things are divided evenly as possible.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

None in particular. I would just want to do the best job I could on all that I was on.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

Mr. Goldstrom & Mr. Harden

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

No

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I hear from the PUBLIC EMPLOYEES all the time about their struggle with their health insurance. We have to get it fixed there is no other way.
