|- Healthcare: As I mentioned before I am a Registered Nurse in the ICU. I help treat patients who can not afford their insulin and go into diabetic ketoacidosis. I have seen patients admitted repeatedly because they can not afford their medications, their doctors visit, and so many other aspects of primary care. Our system is broken in Oklahoma when an elderly man has to mortgage his home in order to pay for his spouse's cancer treatment. Our system is broken in Oklahoma when a patient insists on transferring to an OKC hospital by Uber instead of ambulance because they know they will never be able to repay the ambulance fee. Our current system has failed when a trip to the hospital can ruin your family financially.
- Criminal Justice Reform: Oklahoma has a criminal justice system that has some of the highest incarceration rates in the world. Our state has contracts with for profit prison systems that work to keep our people incarcerated so they can continue to make billions of dollars per year. These same for profit prisons then donate money to our current State Representative here in district 64. This system is not focused on rehabilitation. It is time to end mandatory sentencing. It is time to decriminalize and release all non violent drug offenses so we can treat addiction medically and not criminally. It is time to end our contracts with for profit prisons in the State of Oklahoma.
- Education: Our state has been continuing to lose teachers at an unsustainable rate. New graduates can move to Texas and make over $10,000 more. We must pay our teachers a rate that is competitive with surrounding states and we must fund the classroom as well. My high school text books were often from the 1980's and I graduated high school in 2011. We can not expect to become a top ten state in education while per student spending declines, teachers have to drive for Uber at night to provide for their family, and we continue to throw education dollars at Epic Charter schools, which was allocated $112.96 million, instead of investing in our public schools.
Economic: Our minimum wage has not increased since May of 2007. In order to have minimum wage above the poverty line our state will need a minimum wage of $12.10 per hour. This is a great first step to lifting thousands of Oklahomans out of poverty but in order to make this a sustained change it can not be a one time increase. I will support legislation that ties the minimum wage in Oklahoma to the rate of inflation and makes an adjustment to the minimum wage on a yearly rate.
Gun Safety: I will support legislation that ends open carry and requires a license to carry a gun in Oklahoma. In addition, I will also support red flag laws, universal background checks for all gun purchases, and incentivize safe storage.
