Three of the nine seats on the Middletown Township School District Board of Education were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. John Little Jr., Leonora Caminiti, and incumbent Michael Donlon won election to the three seats by defeating incumbent Vincent Brand, Donald Hager, and Frank Higgins. Andrew Nicholes originally filed to run in the race but was appointed to the Middletown board in August 2016, after incumbent Helene Henkel resigned.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Middletown Township Board of Education consists of nine members elected to three-year terms at large by the district as a whole. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]
Candidates for the school board must be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. They must have resided within the district for at least one year prior to their election or appointment. Candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of a municipality within the district. Board members cannot have been convicted of a felony. There are no term limits.[2]

About the district
Middletown Township School District is located in central New Jersey in Monmouth County. The county seat is Freehold Borough. The district serves K-12 students in several communities including Colts Neck, Farmingdale, and Howell. Monmouth County was home to 628,715 in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[9] The district was the 18th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,807 students.[10]
Demographics
Monmouth County outperformed New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 42.0 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income for Monmouth County was $85,605, compared to the statewide average of $72,062. The poverty rate for the county was 8.2 percent, while it was 10.8 percent for the entire state.[9]
