With every seat on the ballot unopposed, the 2017 Roanoke County school board election mirrored the district's 2013 election. All three seats on the ballot in 2013 were also unopposed, but every incumbent whose term was up for re-election ran and won that year. In 2017, the board was guaranteed to add one new member due to an open seat.
Newcomers won all three seats that were up for election in 2015, but incumbents swept the ballot in two special elections that were held in 2016.
