Russell Carparelli was a judge on the Colorado Court of Appeals. He joined the court on February 7, 2003 and was retained by voters in the 2006 General Election.[1] He retired at the end of 2013 after his eight-year term expired.[2]

Education

Justice Carparelli graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science. He then received his J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law. He earned a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia School of Law.[3]

Professional Career

Justice Carparelli served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1990 and retired Lieutenant Colonel. During his time in the Air Force he was a Prosecutor from 1974 to 1976 and 1977 to 1980, a Criminal Defense Counselor from 1976 to 1977, and a Civil Litigator from 1987 to 1990. He also worked as a Judge for the U.S. Air Force Judiciary, 5th Circuit from 1981-1983, and an appellate judge for the U.S. Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals from 1984 to 1986. He then worked in private practice for the next 12 years, first at Bradley, Campbell, Carney & Madsen, P.C. from 1990 to 1996, Kissinger & Fellman, P.C. from 1996 to 1997 and Messner & Reeves, LLC from 1997 to 2002. On February 7, 2003, he was appointed to the Colorado Court of Appeals.[3] In October 2013, it was announced that Carparelli was selected to become the next executive director of the American Judicature Society. He will start in January 2014 after his retirement from the bench.[4]
