Brunner previously served as Deputy Commissioner of School and Public Lands. He was appointed to this position by then Commissioner Jarrod Johnson in 2012. Brunner previously worked for the Brookings Economic Development Corporation.[1]

Brunner was first elected to the office on November 4, 2014. He was sworn into office on January 10, 2015, replacing predecessor Vernon L. Larson.[2] He left office on January 31, 2022, to serve as a senior policy advisor to Gov. Kristi Noem (R).[3]

Brunner ran for election to the office of South Dakota Commissioner of School and Public Lands. Brunner won the Republican nomination at the statewide convention on June 19-21, 2014, in Rapid City, South Dakota.[4] The general election took place on November 4, 2014.
