James Leutze was a 2010 Democratic candidate for District 9 of the North Carolina State Senate. The primary election was on May 4, 2010, and the general election was on November 2, 2010.

Leutze has served on various state commissions and study committees including the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission. He was also co-chair of a subcommittee charged with studying offshore energy exploration off the North Carolina coast.[2] The group ultimately decided that more study was needed. It issued its final report about the same time as the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
