Robert Cormell
Robert Cormell was a candidate for District 8 representative on the El Paso City Council in Texas. He was defeated in the runoff election on July 15, 2017.
Cormell was also a 2013 candidate for mayor of El Paso. He won 12 percent of the vote in the May 2013 election, placing third of eight candidates for the seat.[1]
Biography
Cormell studied for two years at New Mexico State University. His experience includes work as the founder and executive director of Wayside Teen Center, a co-owner of the home renovation company @LetsRenoThis, the owner of The Bagel Shop, and the founder of the mentoring program MentorONE.[2][3][4]
Elections
2017
The city of El Paso, Texas, held a general election for mayor and city council on May 6, 2017. Runoff elections for mayor and city council and a special election for city council were held on June 10, 2017. The filing deadline for the May election was February 17 and the filing deadline for the June special election was May 1, 2017.
Mayor Oscar Leeser did not run for re-election in 2017. His seat and the city council seats in District 2, 3, 4, and 7 were up for regular election. The June special election, which advanced to a runoff on July 15, filled the vacancy created by the resignation of District 8 Councilwoman Cortney Niland.[5] Cecilia Lizarraga defeated Robert Cormell in the runoff election for the District 8 seat on the El Paso City Council.[6]

Robert Cormell and Cecilia Lizarraga defeated Gilbert Guillen, Adolfo Lopez, and Trinidad Acevedo in the special election for the District 8 seat on the El Paso City Council.[7]

2017
In a NewsChannel9 candidate forum, Cormell said he supported building an arena in downtown El Paso. He expressed opposition to a proposed mixed-use development project on Shadow Mountain Drive in West El Paso because it would obstruct residents' views. He said, "One of the great things we have in El Paso is the beautiful skyline. You look out and see the sunset and mountains."[8]
