An effort to recall three of the five members of the Gadsden Elementary School District school board in Arizona did not go to a vote in 2021. Recall supporters withdrew the recall paperwork prior to the signature filing deadline that was scheduled for July 12, 2021.[1]
The recall effort began in March 2021. Guillermina Fuentes, Gloria Torres, and Rosa Varela were named in the recall petitions. Recall supporters would have had to submit 1,237 petition signatures to put the recall on the ballot.[2][3][4]
Recall supporters
The recall effort was started by Gary Snyder. He said he started the recall petition due to a grand jury indicting Fuentes on ballot harvesting charges in December 2020. He said he included Torres and Varela on the petition because of their political ties to Fuentes. "I think as a school board member you have to recuse yourself so the school board itself doesn't lose their respect and credibility," Snyder said.[2]
Recall opponents
Lizette Esparza, the school district's interim superintendent, said that none of the board members had been found guilty of any crime.[2]
