Of the 48 general election judicial candidates on ballots across the state, 40 of them were incumbents. While a majority of the candidates were unopposed, there were four competitive races on general election day. One incumbent judge was defeated. Three judges stood for retention, and all three were successfully retained.

Interesting races
- One incumbent out of 37 was unsuccessful in keeping his seat in 2014. Ronald K. Roehr was defeated by Robert L. Spears in the race for the Third Judicial Circuit, receiving 49.4% of the vote to Spears’ 50.6%.
- Three justices from the South Dakota Supreme Court stood for retention: David Gilbertson, Lori Wilbur, and Steven Zinter. Each received a vote of confidence, raking in "yes" votes above 80%.
