Garye Vasquez
Garye Vasquez is a judge for Division Two of the Arizona Court of Appeals. He assumed office in 2006. His current term ends on January 4, 2027.
Vasquez ran for re-election for the Division Two judge of the Arizona Court of Appeals. He won in the retention election on November 3, 2020.
Vasquez was appointed to the court by Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano on December 12, 2005.[1][2][3]
Education
Vasquez received his associate degree in general studies from Central Arizona College in 1978, his bachelor's degree in justice studies from Arizona State University in 1981, and his J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1984.[4]
Career
Prior to his appointment to the Arizona Court of Appeals, Vasquez was a partner at the law firm of Cooper, Vasquez & Rueter, LLP.[4]

Vasquez was retained to the Arizona Court of Appeals with 70.4 percent of the vote on November 4, 2014. [5]
Evaluation
The Judicial Performance Review Commission provides Arizona voters with an evaluation of each judge up for retention. The commission votes on whether a candidate meets or does not meet the JPR standards. Each judge is assessed on their legal ability, integrity, communication skills, judicial temperament and administrative performance.[6]
The commission voted that Vasquez met the JPR standards. The vote was 27-0 in favor of retention.[5]

Vasquez was retained to the Arizona Court of Appeals in 2008:
- 109,772 voted in favor of retention.
- 38,135 voted against his retention.[7]

Noteworthy cases
School vouchers
In May 2008, the Arizona Court of Appeals voted to overturn an Arizona state law that provided tax dollars to private and parochial schools. Writing for the court, Vasquez stated: "Only by ignoring the plain text of the Arizona Constitution prohibiting state aid to private schools could we find the aid represented by the payment of tuition fees to such schools in this case constitutional."
Vasquez indicated that such a program would require a constitutional amendment, adopted by the voters of the state, rather than a statute passed by the state legislature. The legislation provided $2.5 million in state tax vouchers to the parents of former foster children who have been adopted, and $2.5 million for disabled children.[8]
