Healthcare

  • MNsure has been a disaster and is proof the government is not good at running programs. Citizens were promised lower premiums, equal or better policies, and broader coverage. Just the opposite has been true and many Minnesotans are worse off than prior to the implementation of MNsure. Families that don’t receive coverage as an employment benefit should have the opportunity to purchase policies on the free market, without government interference.

Taxes & Spending

  • Taxes need to be low broad and simple. They need to be individual as well as business friendly. This will encourage taxpayers and businesses to stay in Minnesota and welcome out-of-state businesses to expand here. Every tax dollar needs to be respectfully spent on government essentials.
  • No new spending should be considered unless it’s absolutely necessary. We need to look at all the existing spending and cut back where possible. When there’s a budget surplus, it should be returned to the taxpayers rather than used as a reason to create new programs and expand government.

Education

  • Allow more options for parents when it comes to K-12 education with funding following the student. Expansion into universal pre-K should not be considered. Instead, concentration needs to be on improving the existing K-12 system.
  • College tuition in state colleges and universities are constantly rising. Rather than looking for more ways for the government to subsidize the increases, it’s time to determine why the increases are happening. Fixes then can be made from there.

Transportation

  • It’s important to build new roads and bridges as well as maintaining those existing. Expansion of mass transit needs to be limited to busses since rail projects are not cost effective. Current estimates for each light rail mile is around $120 million, while one mile of four new lanes of highway would cost one-third that amount.

Metropolitan Council

  • The Metropolitan Council has taken on roles and powers never intended when it was created. The council makes decisions affecting metro area cities and counties and council members are not accountable to their constituents. The Met Council needs to have its responsibilities cut back to coordination of essential services between counties and municipalities. Those local governments need to have representation on the council.[1]
