What is your political philosophy?

Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Is there anything you would like to add?

In the 2018 legislative session, Athena Salman was the prime sponsor for the bill, HB2222, to address the gross inadequacy of feminine hygiene products for women in prison. The bill sparked national outrage and inspired the #LetItFlow campaign, which led to the immediate change in the Arizona Department of Corrections regarding menstrual products.

2016

Salman's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Quality Education

  • Arizona needs to have an education system that promotes success from cradle to career.
  • Our students deserve the best education we can offer. We can foster excellent education by attracting the best candidates out there to become educators. We need to transform the profession into a high quality job with a competitive salary. We also need to reduce classroom sizes and allow teachers more time to prep for their classes. Our state needs top-notch educators to teach our next generation.

Sustainable Jobs

  • In the 21st Century, Arizona should be upgrading its aging infrastructure, while expanding clean energy and technology jobs. Ensuring that infrastructure, such as our public transit system, roads, and drinking water, is safe will allow our state to stay competitive. Meanwhile, we closed the year 2015 as the hottest on record. We need to accelerate solutions that center around renewable and clean energy, because our health and our children’s future depends on it.

Strong Communities

  • We are the catalysts that are capable of driving progress. Everyone deserves to feel safe and secure in their community. As such, we must pass policies to ensure that our LGBTQ brothers and sisters receive equal protection. We must have an immigration system that is humane and keeps families united. We must invest in public safety and shift towards evidence based models that build positive relationships between the community and law enforcement.
  • Strong communities are the backbone of Arizona and our Representatives play a critical role in keeping our communities healthy and supporting families for decades to come.[9]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Arizona

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
