Jennifer "Jen" McMillin participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 5, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jennifer "Jen" McMillin's responses follow below.[1]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) Increasing jobs and wages in the district 2) Improving access and quality of education from birth to retirement |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | Education funding and quality, Childcare, and HealthcareCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]
|
” |
Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jennifer "Jen" McMillin answered the following:
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
“ | The most important principle for an elected official to have is to listen to those he or she represents, even if you don't agree. You have to be accessible, responsive, and compassionate to those that elected you. Another key characteristic is to never stop learning. In the 21st century, every sector is subject to change and our elected officials need to be able to synthesize new information and leverage it for action.[3] | ” |
“ | First and foremost, I believe I will be a successful state representative because of the experiences I've had. As a student that graduated college during the recession, I know what it's like to not be able to find a job in your desired field. As a mom, I know how difficult it is to pay for high-quality healthcare and childcare in Central Illinois. And as tax-payer in a state with financial troubles, I understand the importance of getting Illinois back to financial stability.[3] | ” |
“ | The legacy that I hope to leave is that one caring person in office can make a difference in the lives of the people in her district. I want my sons to know that I ensured a better future for them through hard work, determination, and collaboration.[3] | ” |
“ | The first historical event that I remember vividly was the attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11. I was a sophomore in high school at the time, and that event reshaped my understanding of the role the United States played in the global sphere.[3] | ” |
“ | Solving our financial problems, and specifically our pension deficit. For many years, the state of Illinois has failed to pay their share into the pension system, and now we are facing a huge liability that is affecting every aspect of state government.[3] | ” |
“ | I strive to be like State Senator Penny Severns who represented the 51st from 1987 to 1998. She was a leader for working families, historical preservation, and a remarkable woman that is well-remembered in Decatur and Macon County.[3] | ” |
