Candidate Connection

Aaron Delikta completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Delikta's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Infrastructure Auto Insurance Education

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am not particularly passionate about one specific issue, there are many issues needing resolution.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My Father, Neal Delikta. I look up to him because he is a man that works hard and helps anyone that needs it. He is caring, funny, and just an all around great guy.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

I don't agree with everything in the book, but I truly like the Second Treatise by John Locke.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Hard-working, open-minded, nice, passionate, and truthful

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am hard-working, open-minded, nice, passionate, and truthful

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I believe you need to be a person that can work well with others and you need to be able to open your mind and work on legislation that can benefit everyone. Not just legislation that's beneficial to you or your party.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I was someone who worked for everyone and started from a small town and made it to the top. To be known as a great leader and someone who got a lot done. To prove that you don't need a lot of money and you don't need to be bought out by people to become successful in politics. Lastly, to show everyone that you should always keep an open mind and work with everyone, regardless if you disagree with them.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first historical event I remember was 9/11. I was 5 years old and I remember hearing and seeing how sad everyone was when it happened. I was coming home from school and my Mother was home and she was devastated.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My very first job was being a lifeguard. It only lasted for the Summer because I went back to Michigan State for school.

What happened on your most awkward date?

Honestly, I don't recall having any awkward moments while on a date. Most of the dates I went on were good and had some funny moments, but nothing awkward.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas, because it's a time of the year where your whole family gets together and I love buying gifts for my family and friends and seeing their reactions when opening them.

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. I like the book because it is interesting to read about how Machiavelli thought a Prince should rule back in the day. He truly left a mark in the world of political philosophy when he wrote it.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Percy Jackson, I like learning about Greek history and mythology and the movies were really interesting because the characters all had unique powers that their parents gave them.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My Xbox, I'm a fan of playing video games.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Connection by OneRepublic, I keep hearing the song play in a commercial.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Getting through college and digging myself deeper and deeper into student loan debt.

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

The fact that there is a different amount of people in the House and Senate and the difference in how the districts are drawn. Every area has a different culture so putting certain House districts together for the Senate districts makes a difference in who wins and represents the people.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

I don't think that you need previous government experience to run for State office, but it certainly helps. If you can show you have great ideas and you can work hard, I don't see it being a problem running for a State position.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Our infrastructure. The roads in Michigan are terrible and what happened in Flint is something that we need to make sure gets fixed and never happens again.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

I believe the ideal relationship would be having a Governor and State Legislature that align with the same party, but I also think that wouldn't matter if they could set their differences aside and just work on legislation that they can try and meet in the middle on.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Yes. If you want to get legislation passed, you need to make friendships with other legislators and work together. If elected, I want to work with every legislator because I think if we work together, we can get a lot done.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

I believe we need an independent redistricting committee to draw up the districts because gerrymandering is a problem and it's not fair to have the majority party draw them up.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

Any committee would be fine to me.

If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?

Not at this time

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

Al Pscholka, he was a State Legislator from Michigan who worked with legislators from both parties.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Yes, I want to run for President one day.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I've heard a few, but I don't feel comfortable telling their story.
