Campaign themes

2016

Turonie's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

The message I will take to St. Paul will be one of:

Responsible Spending: Since 2000, Minnesota’s budget has almost doubled. Rising costs of basic items like food and healthcare are leaving Minnesotans with less discretionary income, yet state government spending continues to grow unchecked. For too long, wasteful programs like Light Rail Transit and MNsure have been exempt from even the most basic cost/benefit analysis, taking valuable money and resources from areas where they are needed more.

Local Control: In the same way that states should have more control than the federal government, local cities, counties and school boards should have more control over their residents than states. No one knows the unique needs of a community like its own residents. Applying a state-mandated “one size fits all” solution to our schools and communities takes power away from the people who know their communities best: the residents.

Personal Freedom: Minnesotans come from all walks of life and have many different backgrounds. If elected, one of the things I look forward to most is not telling you how to live your life. The “pursuit of Happiness” guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence means many different things to many different people. In general, if how you live your life doesn’t adversely affect anyone else, you should be free to live it as you please.[2]
