Elections were held yesterday in two of America's 100 largest cities: Charlotte, North Carolina, and Toledo, Ohio. Primary elections in Charlotte were held for Democratic and Republican candidates in the mayoral race. Meanwhile, only Democratic primaries were held for four Charlotte City Council races. Toledo held four nonpartisan primaries to decide general election candidates and also asked voters to decide on a local ballot measure.

On Tuesday night, Mayor Dan Clodfelter (D) forced a primary runoff with Jennifer Roberts after Roberts failed to collect the necessary 40 percent of votes. That runoff will take place on October 6. Edwin B. Peacock III won the Republican nomination for mayor with nearly two-thirds of votes.[1]

In the city council primaries, all five incumbents facing challengers advanced to the general election. At-large incumbents Claire Green Fallon (D) and Vi Lyles (D) will be joined on the general election ballot by Julie Eiselt (D), James "Smuggie" Mitchell (D), Pablo Carvajal (R), John K. Powell Jr. (R) and David Michael Rice (R). Four at-large seats will be on the line in November.[1] Districts 1, 4, 6 and 7 did not hold primaries since no more than one candidate ran from each party.

Toledo had three or more candidates file to run in four of its six city council districts, so those districts held nonpartisan primaries Tuesday night. Incumbents ran in three of those districts, and all of them advanced to the general election. The seat currently occupied by the retiring Mike Craig will be contested in the general election by Peter Ujvagi and Glen Cook. Election night results also showed just over 70 percent of voters approving Issue 1, an initiative decriminalizing recreational marijuana use in the city. Last night, Toledo electors were the first Ohioans to cast votes on recreational marijuana. The rest of the state will get a chance to voice their opinion on November 3, 2015.
