My work is at the intersection of public health, education, and community development-all regarding youth and families. My career has focused upon community health through nutrition. I am a Registered Dietician, recognized by the Michigan Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. I am a member in good standing with the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

In 2015, I was elected to the Muskegon City Council, representing the 3rd Ward in a non-partisan seat. I successfully completed a 4-year term, collaborating with city staff, residents, and business owners to help govern the City of Muskegon. During this time, I was fortunate to championed public health policies, community safety initiatives, and inclusion practices. In addition, I served as a member of Farmers Market Advisory Council and Historic District Committee.

I am a community advocate and tireless supporter of West Michigan. My experience is deep in activism. For more than 10 years I have supported Michigan youth and families in making healthy choices.

As a wife and mother, I am extremely proud of my two children and amazing husband. I am a person that cares deeply about relationships, social justice, and equity.

Sincerely, Debra Warren

  • Protecting women’s reproductive freedom. As over half of the population, women deserve to be treated as equals in our society. From the women’s suffragist movement to the women’s liberation movement, women have had to fight for their rights every step of the way. And while progress has undoubtedly been made, the rights of women are under constant threat. I support the right of a woman to make reproductive medical decisions about her own body in consultation with her doctor, without governmental prohibitions or burdensome restrictions. I have been and will continue to be a fierce champion for my own rights and the rights of all women surrounding reproductive freedom because this issue is real and deeply personal
  • Sensible gun safety for our kids. Harden our rules, not our schools. Everyday we are reminded that gun violence affects everyone in our communities. We must continue to educate and arrive at a cultural and political consensus regarding common sense regulations. Gun violence is a public health and safety crisis. Self-defense must be delinked from owning assault style weapons. Handguns and semi-automatic guns have proliferated to unacceptable levels in society. Self-defense must be delinked from owning assault style weapons. Handguns and semi-automatic guns have proliferated to unacceptable levels in society. I strongly support regulating and limiting access to weapons through increased regulation and stronger licensing procedures.
  • Focusing on teacher recruitment and retention to ensure quality public education and improve infrastructure Education has long been the means of achieving a better quality of life. In our current, knowledge-based, technology-driven economy, the value of education is even greater. Michigan must provide free learning opportunities for everyone. Michigan’s families with children have suffered devastating state budget reductions in education, childcare, school food programs, and many other areas needed for positive child development. All Michigan families and their children should have healthcare, childcare, and education free of cost.
Health Care

I believe that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and our health care system must put people before profits. I support the immediate implementation of a universal single-payer healthcare system in the United States, to enact the principle that healthcare is a human right, free to all people at point of service regardless of their medical, financial, or other circumstance.

Climate policies that protect our community at a state and local level.
Climate justice is a term that acknowledges that different groups are influenced differently by climate change. I embrace a unified vision of environmental protection, shared benefits and sacrifice, and economic development. Our resources are life-sustaining and a source of economic benefit.

Expanding voter access and Vote by Mail as approved by Michigan voters in the 2018 election

The right to participate in our democracy through voting is a basic right extended and protected for all eligible citizens. Everyone deserves equal access to the ballot; election integrity must be maintained and secured. We must safeguard against encroachments upon our fundamental right to vote!
