Campaign themes

2014

Clark's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[2]

  • Improving Transportation
  • "We must support efforts to develop and maintain an efficient transportation infrastructure. I will work with other members of the Jefferson and Shelby County legislative delegations to encourage fiscally responsible regional planning initiatives that reduce traffic and make our roads safe. I will also encourage cooperation between the Alabama Department of Transportation and local elected leaders to encourage the widening of high priority corridors like Highway 261 and Valleydale Road."
  • Supporting the Right to Life
  • "I am pro-life and believe that every human life is sacred. I firmly believe that the unborn have unalienable rights and are entitled to the full protection of the law."
  • Growing Our Economy
  • "As a business owner, I know what it takes to create jobs and grow our economy. The private sector must be freed from burdensome government regulations that stifle economic growth. Shelby County has the potential to be an economic powerhouse with excellent access to transportation and an educated workforce. I will work to free our business owners from unnecessary government interference so they can grow our economy."
  • Education
  • "I will work to improve Alabama’s education system by supporting locally developed, challenging curriculum for our students. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to education. What works in Shelby County may be different from what works in Jefferson County. Local school boards and educators should develop curriculum for our students, not bureaucrats in Washington. I also believe we must prepare our students to be contributing members of a 21st century workforce. I support expanding career-technical opportunities for our high school students so they are prepared to enter college or begin a career out of high school."
  • Healthcare
  • "I am a practicing optometrist and I know the negative impact Obamacare is having on patients and doctors. There are market-based healthcare reforms we should pursue which will improve patient access to healthcare services and maintain the relationship between a patient and their doctor. In addition to improving the quality of healthcare services, commonsense market-based healthcare reform will reduce entitlement spending and decrease our massive government debt."
  • Saving Tax Dollars
  • "I’m a businessman and I know the only way my business can succeed is if I balance my budget. I’ll take the same mindset to Montgomery. I will critically evaluate every expenditure and determine if it is a good use of taxpayer dollars. If it isn’t, I’ll work to have it removed from the budget – it’s that simple. It is our moral responsibility to ensure our children and grandchildren are not burdened by massive government debt for years to come."
  • The Right to Bear Arms
  • "I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. I believe the Constitution means what it says and I will make sure Alabama does everything possible to protect our right to own firearms."

Elections for the Alabama House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014; a runoff election took place where necessary on July 15, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 7, 2014. Doug Clark, Arnold Mooney, Amie Beth Shaver, Cheryl Ciamarra, John Bahakel, Gina McDonald, and Don Murphy faced off in the Republican primary. Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Mooney and Shaver - met in a runoff election, which Mooney won.[3] Mooney was unchallenged in the general election.[4][5][6][7]
