The Finances and Budget Committee was a permanent joint interim committee of the Alabama State Legislature.

The Code of Alabama outlines how committees of the Alabama State Legislature are assigned. Some are assigned by the leaders of either chamber, while others are composed of specific leaders and committee chairs.[1]

Function

It shall be the duty of the committee to make a careful investigation and study of the financial condition of the state, hold budget hearings, inquire into ways and means of financing state government and its programs, and report its findings and recommendations as herein provided.[2][3]

The committee shall be composed of the Lieutenant Governor, the members of the Senate Committee on Finance and Taxation and such other members of the Senate as appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. The committee shall further be composed of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the members of the House Committee on Ways and Means and such other members of the House of Representatives to be appointed by the Speaker of the House; provided, however, that the total committee membership from the House of Representatives shall not exceed 36 members. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance and Taxation and the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee shall be co-chairmen.[4][3]
