A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. Across the country, 21 Democrats and 35 Republicans are not running for re-election. In 2024, 45 incumbents — 24 Democrats and 21 Republicans — did not seek re-election.
