What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Affordable health care Fully funded schools Fix crumbling infrastructure
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
The Gerrymandering problem. The voters should pick there representatives, not the other way around.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Russ Feingold. I admire his ability to balance staying true to his values while still working in a bipartisan way for the good of everyone.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Trump's phony populism rests on one big lie by Jay Michaelson. https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumps-phony-populism-rests-on-one-big-lie
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity first. Service before self. Excellence in all we do. These are the Air Force core values that I use to guide my own life.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am an experienced leader with many years of working in government. I listen to people to try to determine how I can help. I'm willing to work across party lines.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To represent the best interests of the people of the 35th Assembly District.
What legacy would you like to leave?
Fair government that truly represents the people, not special interests, not insurance companies, not political parties.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The moon landing. I was 5 years old.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first real job was the Navy. I served 6 years.
What happened on your most awkward date?
When I first met the woman who would become my wife, all I could think to say was "I hit my head on that too" referring to a decoration hanging in a doorway. We have been married for over 27 years.
What process do you favor for redistricting?
The Iowa model of non-partisan redistricting.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I would like to be on Veterans Affairs and mental health.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
While out knocking doors I met a woman who explained that she is a single mother with two children. She is on BadgerCare. She was offered a promotion at work, she works full-time. but she had to turn down the promotion because she would lose the Badger Care coverage for herself and her two children. And the promotion was not enough to afford buying Health Care on the exchange. I believe it is critical that we except the Medicaid expansion as part of the Affordable Care Act.
