Raaheela Ahmed is the elected board member for the Prince George's County Board of Education, District 5, representing over 80,000 people in Maryland. This lifelong Prince Georgian and product of public schools first ran for office as an 18-year old underdog and anti-establishment figurehead in 2012. She lost that election by 3%, ultimately coming back the following cycle in 2016 to secure a grassroots victory - 32,000 supporters strong. Over the course of her two campaigns, Raaheela went door-to-door to 12,000 homes and attended dozens of community events to better understand the needs of the community. As a board member, she works even harder to be the vocal and active advocate her community deserves. Raaheela is currently running unopposed for re-election to the school board this November 2020.

Outside of elected office, she is the Deputy Director of Campus Vote Project, where she manages the national team of state organizers that focus on institutionalizing voting on college campuses. She is also a trainer with the Progressive Governance Academy.

As a young, first generation, hijabi Muslim woman of Indian and Pakistani descent, Raaheela has broken stereotypes and expectations across the board of what it means to be a service leader. For more information, or to contact Raaheela, visit www.raaheela.com.

  • Our schools should be places where students grow to be voices for justice and advocates for humanity. With Raaheela, let's make it happen!
  • Inherently, Raaheela is a fighter. She will fight for you. She will fight for us.
  • Raaheela is the community leader, advocate and activist we need, and we deserve.
Governmental transparency and accountability

Community engagement and involvement in decision-making
Dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline

Advancing and addressing the needs of students at the margins
I'm running for the Board of Education to participate in creating a better education for the youth of Prince George's County. As a lifelong Prince Georgian and District 5 resident, and K-12 product of PGCPS, I'm highly committed to the success of our community, and feel that I have the necessary skills to propel us forward:

• I have a passion for education and learning, and am currently working for a nonprofit that is focused on institutionalizing civic engagement with college students.
• I'm a meticulous worker, and am steadfast in bringing issues to light, even if it's unpopular
• I work hard to listen to my community, and do what is in the best interest of our kids.
• I am unbought by other politicians. My campaigns have all been strong grassroots efforts; I have never received nor depended on political establishment support for electoral success.

• I have degrees in Finance & Economics: an asset when it comes to budget analysis.
As a Board of Education member, it is my job to work with my board colleagues to oversee the superintendent, pass policies and affirm a budget for the school district, but it is my role to be a community leader and advocate in those spaces.

To me that means:

1. Coming prepared to board meetings with questions that hold our system accountable
2. Responding personally to constituent needs and requests
3. Being present in the community at different events and activities
4. Spreading information and sharing knowledge in a transparent way
5. Offering opportunities for folks to access power, and engage in the civic process

In terms of my role as a board member, my vision is to be a transparent, accountable, engaged and communicative public servant for our kids and our community. My goal is to leave a legacy of leadership that encourages this kind of culture for years to come.
