What is a superdelegate?
Superdelegates in 2016 were automatic delegates to the Democratic National Convention, meaning that, unlike regular delegates, they were not elected to this position. Also unlike regular delegates, they were not required to pledge their support to any presidential candidate, and they were not bound by the results of their state's presidential primary election or caucus. In 2016, superdelegates included members of the Democratic National Committee, Democratic members of Congress, Democratic governors, and distinguished party leaders, including former presidents and vice presidents. All superdelegates were free to support any presidential candidate of their choosing at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.[1]
What are the Democrats Abroad?
The Democrats Abroad is an official state Democratic Party that represents Democrats and U.S. citizens living in other countries. The party was formed in 1964 and, as of 2016, had eight members serving on the Democratic National Committee. The Democrats Abroad have held a global presidential primary election every four years since 1980.[2] In 2016, the Democrats Abroad sent 13 pledged delegates and eight superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention. The votes of superdelegates from the Democrats Abroad were worth only half of a regular superdelegate vote.[3]
Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary
The Democrats Abroad held a global presidential primary election in March 2016. Bernie Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton with almost 70 percent of the vote.[2]
