Tennessee Legislative Information Systems

The Office of Tennessee Legislative Information Systems is a nonpartisan legislative service agency serving the members and staff of the Tennessee General Assembly.

The Office of Legislative Information Systems is governed by a director.[1]

Divisions

Office of Legal Services

The Office of Legal Services provides all bill drafting for all bills, resolutions, and amendments that are considered on the floor of the Tennessee General Assembly. Also, Legal Services staff provides all general and legal research on request from individual legislators and standing committees in the General Assembly. All legal staff is assigned to standing committees. Legal Services staff is responsible for all revisions of the Tennessee Code.[2]

Office of Legislative Administration

The Office of Legislative Administration used to been part of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury's office. Legislative Administration is responsible for all oversight on the Tennessee state budget and the state's finances. Also, Legislative Administration is responsible for providing administrative and personnel support for the Tennessee General Assembly. This includes monitoring purchasing, payroll, and other administrative functions.[2]

History

The Joint Legislative Services Committee was formed in 1977 replacing the Tennessee Legislative Council. The duties of the Office of Legislative Services were folded into MIS, which became the Office of Legislative Information Services in 1996. The office was renamed to the Office of Legislative Information Systems in 2010.[2]
