Peter Courtney (b. June 18, 1943) is a Democratic member of the Oregon State Senate, representing District 11. He was first elected to the chamber in 1998. He has served as Senate President since 2003.

Courtney served as Councilman for Salem City Council from 1974 to 1980. He served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983, and from 1989 to 1998. During this time he served as House Democratic Leader.

Biography

Courtney earned a B.A. from the University of Rhode Island in 1965, an MPA from the University of Rhode Island in 1966, and a J.D. from Boston University in 1969. His professional experience includes working as a professor for Western Oregon University, and as a political commentator for KPTV-12 Portland/KSLM Radio Salem.[1]

Elections for the Oregon State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on May 20, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 11, 2014. Incumbent Peter Courtney was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Patricia Milne defeated Tom Chereck, Jr. in the Republican primary. Courtney also ran on the Working Families Party ticket. Courtney defeated Milne in the general election.[2][3][4]

On November 7, 2006, Courtney was re-elected to District 11 in the Oregon State Senate, defeating Jared Thatcher (R) and Keith Humphrey (C).[7] Courtney raised $405,690 for his campaign, while Thatcher raised $52,661 and Humphrey did not raise any money.[8]
