Five of the seven seats on the Washoe County School District school board were up for election in 2016. Four of the seats came with three-year terms, and one seat came with a two-year term. There was a primary election held on June 14, 2016. In Districts A and E newcomer Scott Kelley and incumbent Angie Taylor won their respective seats after both obtaining more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary election. No candidates in Districts D and G obtained more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary election. So the top two vote-getters advanced to the general election. The race in District C was a special election that came with a two-year term. Debra Feemster (District C), Malena Raymond (District D), and Katy Simon Holland (District G) were elected to the school board in the general election.

Voter and candidate information

The Washoe County school board consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Districts A, B, C, D and E represent specific geographic districts, while Districts F and G are at-large members. There was a primary election on June 14, 2016, and the general election was held on November 8, 2016. Districts A, D, E, and G were up for regular election in 2016. District C held a special election after the resignation of its incumbent.

Candidates had to file their declarations of candidacy with the Washoe County Registrar of Voters office by March 18, 2016. The filing fee for school board candidates in Washoe County was $30. Each candidate had to actively reside in the district for at least 30 days prior to the filing deadline.

Washoe County School District is located in northwestern Nevada in Washoe County. Reno is the county seat. According to the United States Census Bureau, Washoe County was home to 446,903 residents in 2015. The district was the second-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 65,550 students.

Demographics

Washoe County outperformed Nevada as a whole in terms of higher education achievement in the years 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 27.9 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 22.5 percent of state residents. The median household income in Washoe County was $52,910, compared to $52,205 for the state. The poverty rate in the county was 15.4 percent, compared to 15.2 percent for the entire state.
