Campaign themes

2016

Patel's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Keeping our neighborhoods safe

Having worked as a community organizer to prevent violence, I have seen close up just how urgently the state needs to have a comprehensive approach on public safety and criminal justice. As state rep, I will:

  • Strengthen programs designed to put gang-involved youth and ex-offenders reentering our society on a path to a better life through jobs, social services, education and restorative justice practices.
  • Advocate for stronger gun laws that require comprehensive background checks on gun purchasers and that more harshly punish illegal gun sellers who bring dangerous weapons into our communities.
  • Support efforts to decriminalize low-level drug offenses that should be treated as health issues, not criminal issues, and invest in the mental health services that many in our community so desperately need.

Balancing our State Budget

With Governor Rauner’s outrageous cuts to the programs and services our families and communities rely on, the need for a new approach to balancing our state budget is more urgent than ever. As State Rep, I will:

  • Advocate for common sense solutions like a fair income tax to make sure the very wealthy and big corporations are paying their fair share in taxes.
  • Work to end the backroom deals that have squandered needed resources for our communities.
  • Fight back against devastating cuts to services that hurt families, seniors and children.

Investing in Public Education

Public, neighborhood schools are the anchors of healthy communities. As State Rep, I will:

  • Work to fix our broken education funding system and to create an equitable and adequate funding model for public schools.
  • Stand up strongly against the proliferation of new charter schools, which suck the lifeblood from our neighborhood schools.
  • Stand up strongly for a democratically-elected, representative school board that genuinely and effectively represent the voices and needs of Chicago parents and students.
  • Support legislation to make college more accessible and affordable by investing in community colleges, two-to-four year college pathway programs, and fight to adequately fund public colleges and universities.

Expanding Immigrant Rights

Illinois should lead the nation by being the most inclusive state for immigrants and refugees. We’ve made great strides, but Illinois can do more. As State Rep, I will:

  • Work to make Illinois a “sanctuary state,” protecting our immigrant neighbors from deportation and limiting information sharing with ICE.
  • Advocate for the state to provide broader language access at all state agencies.
  • Work to ensure undocumented students and adults have access to health care benefits.

Defending Democracy and Government Accountability

Illinois has made great strides in expanding access to the ballot box by modernizing our voting system. But the work isn’t done. As State Rep, I will:

  • Champion legislation to create automatic and secure voter registration.
  • Work to strengthen our campaign finance disclosure laws and get big money out of politics.
  • Fight against patronage and corruption by supporting legislation that make elections and government more transparent and accountable.

Protecting Worker’s Rights

Workers are the lifeblood of our communities in Illinois. As State Rep, I will:

  • Lead the fight to raise the minimum wage statewide.
  • Support small businesses with expanded tax credits so they can take care of their businesses and workers.
  • Keep the promise that the state made to our retirees by protecting and fully funding pensions for public employees.[1][2]
