There were several special elections scheduled for the state of Mississippi in 2013.

District 5
State House District 5
Rep. Kelvin Buck (D) was elected Mayor of Holly Springs, MS. A special election was called for November 5, with a runoff on November 26. Winners of the November 5 election, Andre R. DeBerry and John Gary Faulkner, faced off in the November 26 runoff election, and Faulkner won. Candidates had until October 7 to file certified nomination papers. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan.[1][2]

State House District 110
Rep. Billy Broomfield (D) was elected Mayor of Moss Point, MS. A special election was called for November 5, with a runoff on November 26. Winners of the November 5 election, Jeramey Anderson and Aneice R. Liddell faced off in the November 26 runoff election, and Anderson won. Candidates had until October 7 to file certified nomination papers. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan.[3][4]

Rep. George Flaggs, Jr. (D) was elected Mayor of Vicksburg, MS. A special election was called for November 5. Oscar Denton won the November 5 special election. Candidates had until October 7 to file certified nomination papers. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan.[5][6]

State House District 11
Rep. Joe Gardner (D) died in office on February 4, 2013. A special election to fill the vacancy was held March 26, 2013. As no candidate took more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Anderson Boothe and Lataisha M. Jackson - met in a runoff election on April 16, 2013, which Jackson won. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan.[7][8][9]

Bennie Turner (D) died on November 27, 2012. A special election to fill his District 16 seat in the Mississippi State Senate took place on January 15, 2013. Candidates had until December 17, 2012, to file. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan. Angela Turner Lairy, Bennie Turner's daughter, won the seat.[10][11]

State House District 28
Alice Harden (D) died on December 6, 2012. A special election to fill her District 28 seat in the Mississippi State Senate took place on February 5, 2013. Candidates had until January 7 to file. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan. As no candidate took over 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Marshand Crisler and Sollie B. Norwood - met in a runoff on February 26, 2013, which Norwood won.[12][13][14][15][16]

Longtime Rep. David Gibbs (D) died in office on January 13, 2013. A special election to fill the vacancy was held on March 12, 2013. Candidates had until February 11 to file. As no candidate won 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Karl Gibbs and Eddie Longstreet - met in a runoff election on April 2, 2013. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan.[17][18][19][20]

District 59
State House District 59
Kevin McGee (R) resigned his District 59 seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives on November 19, 2012, following his criminal prosecution in an ethics case over public contracts that went to his family's company. McGee agreed to pay a $10,000 fine to resolve the case. A special election to fill the vacancy was held on January 8, 2013. Candidates had until December 10, 2012, to file. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan. Brent Powell won more than 51 percent of the vote to take the seat, avoiding a runoff.[21][22][23]

State House District 95
Rep. Jessica Upshaw (R) was found dead on March 24, 2013, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A special election was called for May 28, which Patricia H. Willis won. Candidates had until April 29 to file certified nomination papers with the Secretary of State.[24]

- Mississippi uses an open primary system, meaning voters are not required to declare a party preference when registering to vote.
- The deadline for registration is 31 days prior to the election.
- Mississippi does not permit online voter registration.

Mississippi is one of 8 states which allow early voting but require an excuse to vote early. Contact your local election office to find out when early voting is available in your county.
Elections Performance Index
Mississippi ranked 51st out of the 50 states and District of Columbia in the Pew Charitable Trusts' Elections Performance Index (EPI), based on the 2012 elections. The EPI examined election administration performance and assigned an average percentage score based on 17 indicators of election performance. These indicators were chosen in order to determine both the convenience and integrity of these three phases of an election: registration, voting and counting. Mississippi received an overall score of 37 percent.[25]
