Biography

Michael Smith was born in Sandusky, Ohio. His career experience includes working in construction. Smith has been affiliated with the Central Ohio AFL-CIO, the Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, the Central Ohio Building Futures Program, and the Licking County Democratic Club.[1]

Retired brcklayer, married 53 years (yes, to the same beatiful bride), 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandaughters. Graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Sandusky, Ohio. Moved to central Ohio in 1989. Moved to Johnstown in 1995. Moved to Newark in 2020. Served as President of Bricklayers Local #55 for 5 years. Served as an executive Board member of the Columbus, Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council for 9 years. Served as a founding member of the executive board of the Central Ohio, Franklin County Building Futures Program. Currently serve as Teacher Coordinator for Building Futures. Officiated hogh school football for 20 years. Served as President of the Licking County Democratic Club for three and a half years. Worked as an usher at Nationwide Arena for 23 years. Have participated in numerous volunteer activities throughout central Ohio and Licking County. Yes, I try to stay active.
  • To highlight the pride and dignity of work, and the rights of workers to organize.
  • To remove and hold accountable candidates and office holders that refuse to govern to the will of the people.
  • To return our State House to a governance, "OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people.
Labor rights, freedoms of choice, our right to vote and have our vote be properly recognized.
My father. He was an honorable industrious man. Worked over 30 years at a GM plant in Sandusky. Never enjoyed one moment of retirement. Passed away very unexpectedly one night in his sleep at the age of 53. I was just 21 then with a wife and 2 children. He taught me the dignity of work, working hard to achieve your goals. I have tried to emulate him all these years. He also knew how to take a break and enjoy himself with his family on occasion. I have yet to accomplish that goal to my satisfaction. He created great memories that way. In many ways, I endeavor to be as great a man as he was in my eyes. I still stive to earn his pride, and justify the many sacrifices my parents made to bring me up proper.
Honesty to the electorate, honesty to oneself, and respect for the office.
I listen to the people. I try very hard to steer things in the direction that is either shown me by the majority, or in the absense of that direction, to a high moral standard of my own.
To serve the citizens of the district in the most effective manner possible. To defend and promote ideals that are core to your beliefs, to fight ideas that are contrary to the good of the people, and to impliment in good faith the will of the people when directed to do so through the voice of the ballot box. None of this is driven primarily by the whose party the idea belongs to. I will support and promote good ideas regardless of whether there is an 'R' or a 'D' sponsoring it, and will likewise fight bad ideas with the same criteria.
I would like to leave a better world to those behind me than that which was left to me.
My mother and father were huddled around the television one night with an intense look on their faces. I asked what the fuss was about. My mother responded that I should hush. They were trying to determine whether my father was going to have to head off to war. The Bay of Pigs. I was about 8 years old.
Worked at McDonald's in Sandusky at the age of 14. Worked ther for about a year or so.
Cooperation, productive negotiation, and loyal opposition when appropriate.
Homelessness, retaining well trained and educated work force, controlled development, retaining and promoting agriculture and aiding the farmers in their daunting task of providing food for our tables and at the same time preserving our environment. We must work in concert with our farmers and not against them to achieve a clean, productive environment.
It may be, depending on how that experience is used. I see far too many cases where that experience is used to screw over the voters of this great state.
Yes, absolutely. Most often, progress is made through negotiation and compromise. This is a most difficult task when respect for each other's ideals and beliefs is lacking. Once we establish a respectful diagogue committed to understanding each other, we often find that we agree on more than we disagree.

Oversight, yes. Granting, only in the most rare and extreme emergency. It is a power and responsibilty not to be taken lightly, and should be subject to the most intense scrutiny, and must be consistant with the Ohio State Constitution and the U S Constitution.
